Lafayette Mother Seeking Donations to support those with Disabilities
Lafayette, Louisiana – Karen Pohlman Juneau, a Lafayette mother, is working to fill a Christmas wish to help those with disabilities. Juneau’s son, Skyler, is autistic and has lived at the St. Mary’s Residential Training School since he was 12 years old. Skyler was Juneau’s motivation to launch a fundraiser for a new residential home at the school.
Over the past four years, Juneau has been fundraising to support her initiative through the Sky’s the Limit of Acadiana, a nonprofit organization in Lafayette. She has been raising money to build the new Acadiana House through the Golf4aCause Tournament, which raised $235,113.09. However, the organization is short $15,000 from reaching its fundraising goal of $250,000.
The Acadiana House is one of fifteen group homes developed on the school’s campus. Each home has eight rooms, and the residents will have their own bedroom. In 2019, the school held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the opening of the homes. The 120 residents will be moving into these 15 homes very soon, including the Acadiana House for "medically fragile" individuals.
“Finishing this project will allow special needs individuals to live comfortably in a home setting,” said Juneau.
In 2011, Juneau established Sky’s the Limit of Acadiana, a non-profit organization. Her vision was to work toward the development of a residential community for residents with special needs.
